Rehan Ahmed, an 18-year-old all-rounder from Leicestershire, has been formally included in England's Test squad for the tour of Pakistan. Despite his limited experience—just three first-class games—the ECB felt that exposing one of English cricket's most exciting rising stars to this environment would be highly beneficial. Should he be selected to play, Ahmed (born August 13, 2004) would set a new record as England's youngest-ever male debutant, beating the long-standing mark set by Brian Close in 1949.
The leg-spinner would also be the first player from his county to make the England squad since 2011, when James Taylor was selected. Ahmed's early stats include 195 runs and nine wickets in first-class cricket. Both Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have been vocal about his potential, describing the teenager as a truly exceptional talent.
During a press conference before the opening Test, McCullum was full of praise for the young player. Known for his own aggressive approach to the game, McCullum believes Rehan has the mental toughness and confidence to excel and overcome any obstacles he faces during the tour. He noted that this is a huge chance for the 'young gun' to showcase his skills to the world.
McCullum acknowledged that while Ahmed is only 18, he has a wonderful opportunity to prove his worth on the international stage. The former New Zealand captain clarified that the coaching staff doesn't expect him to be a polished professional yet, but they recognize that he possesses a rare, natural gift. Similarly, Ben Stokes told Sky Sports that Rehan's precocious talent gives him a higher ceiling than most. Stokes highlighted how unusual it is for someone so young to be this impactful with both the bat and the ball.
Earlier, speaking to Sky Sports, skipper Ben Stokes said with the talent Rehan possesses at this young age, he could achieve a lot more than others. Stokes admitted that they see him as one of those very rare talents, to have someone at such a young age be so noticeable with the way he bowls and the way he bats.
Stokes added that the team management is committed to nurturing Ahmed's growth. The captain also cautioned against overanalyzing his inclusion, suggesting that while he is thrilled to have Rehan in the mix, the decision to actually hand him a Test cap will be based on whether the management feels the time is right. The three-match series is set to kick off on December 1 in Rawalpindi.
