Even though RR's skipper Sanju Samson put up a massive fight to close the gap, DC held their nerve to win by 20 runs. This result is a lifeline for DC's IPL 2024 playoff dreams and sees them climb to fifth position, overtaking LSG, while RR continues their slump with a second straight defeat.
Delhi Capitals (DC) survived a nail-biting drama against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, despite opposition captain Sanju Samson’s single-handed threat to end the mighty chase. DC eventually managed to win by 20 runs to keep their IPL 2024 playoff chances alive, while RR suffered their second consecutive loss. With a crucial win, DC has toppled LSG and has climbed to the fifth spot.
Tasked with a huge chase of 222 runs in Delhi, Sanju Samson stood as the sole pillar for the Royals. Entering the fray in the very first over following the early exit of Yashasvi Jaiswal (4), Samson attacked from the start, piling up 40 runs in the powerplay. However, he lacked real support from his teammates, who only managed brief contributions. While Jos Butler fell for 19, Riyan Parag and Shubham Dubey contributed 27 and 25 runs, respectively.
Samson's innings finally closed at 86 runs off 46 deliveries. The Royals looked to Rovman Powell for a late-game miracle, but his 13 runs couldn't change the outcome. Helping DC secure the win were Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mukesh Kumar, each of whom took two wickets.
Earlier in the match, DC exploded out of the gates with openers Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel putting on a devastating 60-run partnership in just 4 overs. Fraser-McGurk was particularly unstoppable, hitting a half-century in just 19 balls, which included a brutal 28-run over off Avesh Khan. Porel also contributed a rapid-fire 65 off 36 balls. Although wickets fell regularly thereafter, a handy 41 from Tristan Stubbs ensured DC finished with a massive 221/8 in their 20 overs. For the Royals, Ravichandran Ashwin was the standout bowler, picking up three wickets.
