Hamilton Masakadza shares his thoughts on which young players can replace Rohit and Kohli

India is facing a tough transition in T20Is after the departures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. After leading the team to glory at the T20 World Cup in Barbados, both legends retired from the format to let the next generation take over. With Jadeja also exiting the scene, a door has opened for fresh faces to establish themselves. This new chapter began with the T20I series against Zimbabwe, led by the young Shubman Gill.
Team India faces a difficult task in filling the void that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have left in the T20Is. After leading the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup victory in Barbados, the two Indian cricketing legends bid farewell to the shortest format. They decided to hand over the baton to the younger generation. With Kohli, Rohit, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring, an opportunity for young players to distinguish themselves in the Indian squad opened up. The transition phase began with the T20I series against Zimbabwe, led by young Shubman Gill.

The series started on a disappointing note for the Men in Blue, who crumbled in the opening game and lost surprisingly while chasing a low score of 116. However, the youth showed their resilience on Sunday, claiming a massive 100-run victory, largely thanks to a blistering hundred from the young opener Abhishek Sharma.

According to former Zimbabwe international Hamilton Masakadza, India's selection committee has plenty of options to fill the void, thanks to the country's incredible depth of talent. Speaking to the Times of India, he admitted that while it's nearly impossible to find exact replacements for players of that caliber, the sheer volume of skilled players in India means the team won't be left stranded. He emphasized that while finding 'replacements' is easy, finding players who can match the legendary heights of the retiring trio will be the real challenge.

Masakadza specifically highlighted Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the two batters with the potential to fill the gap left by Kohli and Rohit. He expressed particular excitement about Gill's progression, noting that after observing him across all three formats, he believes Gill is perfectly equipped to step up. He mentioned that Jaiswal is equally capable of taking on this responsibility.

Pointing out Jaiswal's explosive start to his international career, Masakadza concluded that both players are ones to watch and possess the quality necessary to bridge the gap left by these world-class veterans.

At the same time, Zimbabwe legend Andy Flower commented on India's transition, noting that the battle for the opening slot between Jaiswal and Abhishek is becoming a major point of interest. Flower believes that this kind of internal competition is exactly what will push Indian cricket forward.
