Every clash between two teams usually boils down to a handful of key matchups between star players, and the winner of these duels often dictates the final result. Rohit has hit the ground running this tournament, boasting a century and a half-century in India's first two outings. He's played with impressive composure and a clear sense of game management, showing a strong desire to protect his wicket. Boult, meanwhile, has had a somewhat underwhelming campaign by his own high standards. While he's managed to keep the scoring rate low—averaging about 4.21 runs per over across three games—his three wickets have come at a disappointing average of 40.66.
That said, the dynamic could shift when they clash on Thursday. Looking at their head-to-head history in ODIs, Boult has clearly dominated; he has sent Rohit packing four times in just 136 balls. With 90 of those deliveries being dot balls, it's evident that Boult knows exactly how to keep Rohit under pressure.
In three of those four dismissals, the Indian opener fell for a very low score, highlighting just how central Boult is to New Zealand's strategy for neutralizing Rohit. The left-arm seamer also holds a psychological advantage, having tasted recent success. Earlier this year, he caught and bowled Rohit cheaply during the fourth ODI of their five-match series. He then doubled down in the pre-tournament warm-up, trapping Rohit LBW early in the innings.
It's fair to say that the energy and direction of this match will be defined by this specific rivalry. Whichever player wins this psychological and technical battle will hand their team a significant edge.
