India opened their three-match series against Sri Lanka with a dominant seven-wicket win, now leading 1-0. It was a stellar performance by a youthful Indian team in Colombo; led by Shikhar Dhawan's unbeaten 86, the side chased 263 runs in only 36.4 overs at the R Premadasa stadium, with Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan playing key roles.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Sri Lanka managed 262/9 in their 50 overs, bolstered by a strong finish. The top score came from number eight Chamika Karunaratne (43), while Dasun Shanaka (39) and Charith Asalanka (38) added vital runs to make the total defendable.
The Indian bowlers put in a cohesive effort, with Deepak Chahar, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kuldeep Yadav all picking up two wickets each. Hardik and Krunal Pandya also contributed, taking one wicket apiece.
Prithvi Shaw gave India a flying start, smashing 43 runs off just 24 deliveries to hit the 50-run mark in five overs. Ishan Kishan, making his debut on his birthday, maintained that aggression by attacking the spinners, claiming the second-fastest fifty in Indian ODI history on his debut.
Making his debut as captain, Shikhar Dhawan led by example with a half-century to steer India home. Suryakumar Yadav also impressed on his debut with an unbeaten 31, helping India hit the target with 80 balls remaining. For his explosive opening spell, Prithvi Shaw was named Player of the Match. The teams will meet again for the 2nd ODI on July 20th at the same venue.
