Australia claims the top spot in ICC Test rankings, pushing India down

In the rankings published by the ICC on May 1, 2020, Australia has replaced India as the world's number one Test team. This makes Australia the leaders in both the Test and T20i categories, while England holds the top position for ODIs. The reshuffle was a direct result of the ICC removing statistics from 2016-17 to refresh the standings. This particular timeframe had been a golden era for India, marked by numerous wins over powerhouse teams like Australia and England.

The ICC clarified that India's initial rise to the top back in October 2016 was fueled by a stellar record of 12 wins and just one loss, including dominant series victories over England and Australia. Conversely, Australia's ranking had been suppressed by losses to South Africa and India during those years. By excluding that specific period from the current calculations, the points were redistributed, causing several teams to switch places in the hierarchy.

In the Test arena, Australia leads with 116 points, New Zealand follows with 115, and India trails in third with 114. The T20i standings show Australia in first place (278), England second (268), and India third (266). Meanwhile, in the ODI rankings, England takes the lead with 127 points, followed by India at 119 and New Zealand at 116.
