On Friday, the BCCI announced it is calling off the August tour of Zimbabwe. The decision was driven by the current global state of the Covid-19 pandemic. For many sports fans in India, this wasn't a surprise, as the Zimbabwe series was seen as a lower priority compared to other high-profile matchups on the team's calendar this year.
This follows a previous update from the BCCI on Thursday, where they postponed the June-July tour of Sri Lanka indefinitely for the same reasons. Currently, contracted Indian players haven't started their practice sessions, and it's unlikely these camps will open back up before July due to the prevailing health situation in the country.
According to a statement from BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, training camps will stay closed until the threat of the virus is neutralized and players are safe. Although the board is exploring ways to restart both domestic and international cricket, they are prioritizing health over speed to avoid any disasters. There have already been mentions of potentially holding the IPL in empty stadiums. Additionally, officials are gathering feedback from players and coaching staff about how to handle practice camps, while the ICC is convening this week to discuss alternatives for the major international tournament.
