To reach the target of 178, DC leaned on all-rounders Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel, who scored 48 and 38 respectively. Their unbeaten 75-run partnership was the turning point, securing a four-wicket win and leaving Mumbai Indians to lament their ongoing struggle to win an opening game of the tournament, a trend lasting since 2012.
Delhi Capitals defeated Mumbai Indians in an exciting contest of the IPL 2022. Chasing a target of 178, Lalit Yadav (48) and Axar Patel (38) starred with the bat to pull off a stunning win for DC. Both the all-rounders delivered brilliant counter-attacking skills and added unbeaten 75-runs to take their team to a four-wicket win. Mumbai Indians’ losing streak continued as they are winless in an IPL opener since 2012.

Mumbai Indians started strong after being asked to bat, with captain Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan dominating the powerplay to rack up 53 runs. The momentum shifted when Delhi's captain, Rishabh Pant, brought in Kuldeep Yadav, who successfully dismissed Rohit for 41.

Ishan Kishan remained the dominant force for MI, scoring an unbeaten 81 through a series of calculated and precise shots. Tilak Varma looked poised for a big score but was dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed for 22. Together, Kuldeep (3/18) and Ahmed (2/27) did the bulk of the damage to the MI batting lineup.

DC's pursuit of the target started promisingly, but they soon struggled as Mumbai's bowlers took command during a collapse at the top of the order. Murugan Ashwin played a key role, first removing Tim Siefert for 21 and then following it up by dismissing Mandeep Singh for a duck in the very same over.

The pressure mounted further when Tymal Mills removed Pant for just 1 run in the following over. Prithvi Shaw provided some stability with 38 runs, and Shardul Thakur added a quick 22 off 10 balls before falling to Basil Thampi. Ultimately, it was the composed batting of Yadav and Patel—who focused on smart shot selection rather than reckless hitting—that rescued DC from a precarious position to win the match.
