Because T20I positions are more competitive than ever, many players are viewing the upcoming league as their best chance to impress the national selectors before the major event.
With T20Is at a premium than expected and puts available to all, few players will hope to intrigue selectors in front of the mega-events.
Given that the Indian T20 squad for the 2022 World Cup is still a work in progress, the IPL offers a golden opportunity for players to stand out. For a long time, Virat Kohli has acted as the team's anchor. The top order—comprising Rohit, Rahul, and Kohli—feels a bit stagnant, and even a versatile player like Hardik Pandya seems to be operating on the fringes of the core strategy.
Rahul has the ability to attack from the get-go if that's the strategy, but Kohli may need to tweak his style to stay effective. Without a lineup of established power-hitters, a poor start from Rohit could leave the team struggling to recover. While Rishabh Pant provides some firepower, India lacks the depth of finishers seen in other top teams. It's still unclear who will fill those critical batting roles. This puts Kohli in a position where he must adapt to the team's evolving needs and prove he can transcend his traditional role.
Another contender is Ishan Kishan, Rohit's opening partner in the IPL. Shardul Thakur also has a path to selection if he has a standout season. His success will depend on how DC manages him, but if he delivers with both bat and ball, he makes a compelling case for himself.
With world-class bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami already in the mix, India is looking for one more swing specialist, and Deepak Chahar seems to be the preferred choice, especially since his batting has improved. This puts significant pressure on Bhuvneshwar Kumar to perform exceptionally well during the IPL to reclaim his spot.
If Shardul Thakur has a brilliant IPL campaign, he could easily find himself in the squad. It largely depends on CSK's strategy, but a strong all-round performance would make him hard to ignore. While there are many options on paper, the selectors first need to decide exactly what role they want their spinner to play.
Ravichandran Ashwin is a versatile option who enjoys the captain's trust, but he sometimes focuses too much on restricting runs rather than taking wickets in T20s. This is why wrist-spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav were given priority in white-ball cricket. While Shami and Harshal Patel are primary contenders, the IPL could shift the balance. If Patel fails to replicate his previous success and another bowler emerges, that spot is wide open.
