The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) recently suggested in a press meeting that Dubai is available to host the 13th edition of the IPL if the BCCI seeks an overseas venue. Weighing in on the situation, West Indian legend Michael Holding has backed the BCCI's position. Speaking via an Instagram Live video, Holding argued that the tournament should go ahead provided it doesn't clash with other international commitments. The spotlight is currently on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which was meant to start in Australia this October but is being reconsidered due to the pandemic. Holding maintains that the BCCI shouldn't be stopped from organizing the IPL, even if the T20 World Cup is ultimately scrapped for the season.
Last week the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) said in a press meet that it is offering BCCI to host the 13th season of IPL in Dubai if Indian cricket board is planning to conduct the tournament overseas. Now West Indian legend Michael Holding has come in support of BCCI regarding to host the current season of IPL. In an Instagram live session video Michael Holding said if IPL is not being a barrier to other international cricketing events then they have every right to host the tournament. The biggest event in cricket this year is the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament was scheduled to begin in Australia from October but due to the Coronavirus global pandemic ICC planned to reconsider the possibility of hosting the tournament. Holding also said that BCCI has every right to move ahead with the plan to host the IPL even if T20 World Cup is called off this year.
The ICC board is expected to convene on June 10 to determine whether the T20 World Cup can actually happen this year. Meanwhile, the BCCI has yet to announce a new plan for the IPL since its indefinite postponement two months ago. While the ICC's verdict will heavily influence the trajectory of IPL 2020, there is a growing sense that the ICC might clear the way for the league, given that the Australian government has yet to establish clear timelines for reopening its borders. Cricket fans worldwide remain anxious, waiting for the ICC to decide the fate of the T20 World Cup.
