Choosing to bat first, MI got off to a promising start thanks to aggressive boundary-hitting from Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. Although Rohit (28) looked dangerous at the start, he was unable to convert it into a big score after Aiden Markram took a sharp catch. Ishan played a helpful knock of 38, while Suryakumar Yadav (7) had a quiet outing and was dismissed early.
Tilak Verma gave MI a necessary boost with a quick-fire 37 off 17 balls. This set the stage for Cameron Green, who dominated the latter stages to score his first IPL half-century (64), including a punishing 18th over against Natarajan.
