As India starts a new chapter in the World Test Championship, they host New Zealand—the first-ever WTC winners led by Kane Williamson—for a two-match series. Former New Zealand captain Dion Nash has highlighted that facing India in their own backyard continues to be the most daunting task for any team in the world.
Indian team begins a fresh cycle of the World Test Championship with a two-match Test series against New Zealand at home. Kane Williamson led Kiwis are the inaugural WTC champions. Former Kiwi captain Dion Nash admitted that facing India on their home soil in Tests is still the ‘premier challenge’ for every team in international cricket.
Nash mentioned that few places in the cricketing world offer such a one-sided advantage as India does. While he acknowledged that New Zealand's early-season conditions can be tricky, he emphasized that the Indian team has been nearly flawless at home lately. Major powers like England, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa have all struggled significantly against the spin-friendly conditions India provides.
According to Nash, securing a victory in India has become almost an impossible feat. He noted that the environment remains consistently unfamiliar and hostile, especially for Western teams. On another note, Nash suggests that relinquishing the T20 captaincy might actually boost Virat Kohli's batting performance across the board, arguing that the burden of leadership can often hold a player back.
The former all-rounder argued that with the current density of the cricket calendar, it's a smart move not to captain the side in every format. Nash is confident that the Indian team will adjust to Kohli's new position. With Kohli set to return for the second Test, the opening five-day match between India and New Zealand begins today at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
