The Proteas have opted for a spin-heavy approach for their Bangladesh tour, sparking the recall of all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy

Heading to the Bangla National Cricket Stadium in late October 2024, all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy has been recalled to South Africa's 15-player squad for the upcoming two-Test series in Bangladesh. It has been quite a while since he last featured in a Test match, with his last appearance dating back to March 2023. At 30, the all-rounder has three Test caps and two wickets to his name, though his first-class pedigree is far more extensive, boasting 247 wickets and almost 5,000 runs at an average of 30.41.

Muthusamy, who specializes in left-arm orthodox spin, is part of a trio of lead spinners accompanying the team to Bangladesh, alongside Dane Piedt and Keshav Maharaj. South Africa’s Test head coach, Shukri Conrad, noted his appreciation for the efforts of both the South African and Bangladeshi boards in ensuring the series took place.

Conrad highlighted that touring Bangladesh is always a significant challenge because the home side has become so dominant in their own conditions. To counter this, the coaching staff handpicked a squad tailored to the expected environment, including three specialist spinners capable of stepping up. He specifically mentioned that this is a fantastic opportunity for Senuran Muthusamy to prove his worth and make a real impact with both bat and ball, and the team is eager to see what he brings to the table.

Coach Shukri Conrad added that he believes the squad's versatility and depth are the keys to overcoming this challenge. On the bowling front, Kagiso Rabada is expected to lead the pace attack, supported by Nandre Burger, Dane Paterson from Western Province, and Wiaan Mulder from the Lions. Notably, Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee are missing from the lineup as they undergo a 12-week conditioning program through November.

The only player in the squad without a Test cap is the Warriors' batter Matthew Breetzke, who recently toured the West Indies. Temba Bavuma will captain the side for this ICC World Test Championship series starting October 21. Additionally, the team will be supported by batting coach Ashwell Prince, who is returning for the Bangladesh leg.

Before flying out from OR Tambo International Airport on October 15, 2024, the players will undergo a red-ball training camp at Pretoria's Centre of Excellence from October 12 to 14. The tour kicks off with the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, scheduled for October 21–25.

The action then shifts to the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram for the second Test from October 29 to November 2. These two matches are high-stakes for both nations, as they are vital for staying in the running for a spot in the World Test Championship final.
