Shreyas Iyer is heading to Delhi to rejoin the Indian team before the second Test against Australia kicks off on Friday, February 17. To be safe, he was sent to the NCA in Bengaluru for treatment on his back shortly before the opening Border-Gavaskar Trophy match in Nagpur. This same injury had also kept him out of the ODI matches against New Zealand, but he is now fit to play again.
Shreyas Iyer will join the Indian squad in Delhi ahead of the second Test against Australia, which starts on February 17 (Friday). Iyer who suffered from a back injury was sent to the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru days ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Nagpur as a precautionary measure. The resilient batter is now fit to make a return after an injury, which had also ruled him out of the ODI series against New Zealand.
According to an official announcement from the BCCI, Shreyas Iyer has successfully completed his recovery program at the National Cricket Academy and has been given the green light by the medical team. He is now expected to join the squad in New Delhi for the second Test of the Mastercard Australia tour.
Having been sidelined for over a month, Iyer's return creates a selection dilemma for the management, as they may be inclined to put him back in the starting XI. His inclusion would mean another player has to be dropped. While Iyer was out, the team decided to give T20 specialist Suryakumar Yadav a shot in the first Test.
While Iyer made a massive impact with a century on his Test debut, Suryakumar struggled to find his rhythm, falling for only 8 runs to Nathan Lyon. Iyer has established himself as a cornerstone of India's middle order, consistently performing in both Test and ODI cricket.
