Sunil Gavaskar weighs in on the Indian batters' form after the showdown with Pakistan

The long-awaited Asia Cup battle between cricket powerhouses India and Pakistan ended in frustration for fans and athletes alike, as Saturday's Group A match was washed out by steady rain. Although Pakistan got off to a flying start by taking four early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya steadied the ship with a vital 138-run partnership, guiding India to a score of 266. The Indian team now heads into a high-stakes game against Nepal today (September 4) in Pallekele.

India's top order crumbled during the first match against Pakistan, as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill were all dismissed without putting up a significant fight. Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar observed that while the balls that got Rohit and Virat out were well-bowled, Shubman Gill looked completely unlike his usual self.

Gavaskar pointed out that better footwork could have saved Rohit and Virat. He also mentioned that Shreyas Iyer was unlucky, as his powerful hook shot was caught perfectly by a fielder. As for Gill, Gavaskar found his performance strange and subdued, noting that the batter seemed uncertain and wasn't playing with his natural style.

Gavaskar remarked that Ishan Kishan demonstrated how a specialist opener can adapt to any position in the batting order, which is often easier than asking a middle-order player to open. He highlighted that having an opener move down the order provides India with a valuable left-handed option. To wrap up, Gavaskar praised Hardik Pandya for his composure under pressure and for steering India away from a precarious situation.
