Ravindra Jadeja recalls the insomnia and the mental struggle of trying to find his way back to the top

For Ravindra Jadeja, the 2018 trip to England was a life-changing experience. He went from being a fringe player excluded from the main Test and ODI rosters to becoming an indispensable part of the World Test Championship squad.

In an interview with The Indian Express, Jadeja discusses his evolution into a power hitter, his exceptional work in the field, his development as a bowler, and the story behind his memorable 2019 World Cup semi-final celebration.

For about a year and a half, Jadeja struggled with severe sleeplessness. He often found himself wide awake until 4 or 5 in the morning, consumed by thoughts of how to restart his career.

Sleep became impossible as he faced a professional dead-end. He was traveling the world with the Test team but never actually took the field, and he was completely out of the ODI picture. Since he was always on tour, he couldn't even return to domestic leagues to get some game time, leaving him with no way to show his value. He spent every waking moment obsessing over how to break back into the team.

The 2018 Oval Test was the definitive turning point for him, completely restoring his self-belief and performance levels. Beating a top-tier English bowling attack proved to him that he possessed the skill to score runs anywhere in the world. This surge in confidence paved the way for his successful return to the ODI format after Hardik Pandya was sidelined by injury.
