According to Kapil Dev, elite players like KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli have the skill to score at a 150+ strike rate, but they need to commit to a specific role—either anchoring the innings or attacking from the start. He criticized them for playing too conservatively, which often leads to risky shots and wickets at the end of the innings, leaving the middle order under immense pressure.
The captain who led India to victory in 1983 suggested that if the current top order cannot evolve their game to match the speed of T20s, the team should look toward younger, fresher talent. He emphasized the need for fearless batting, arguing that while scoring 80 or 90 runs is impressive, a player who survives 20 overs only to finish with 60 runs isn't providing the value the team needs in a high-speed game.
Dev further emphasized that marquee players must deliver game-changing performances to justify their spots. Meanwhile, India is preparing for a five-game T20I series against South Africa beginning June 9, though Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been given a break and will not feature in the series.
