Canada secured the gold medal in women's ice hockey at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics by defeating their fierce rivals, the USA, 3-2. Sarah Nurse got the scoring started, and captain Marie-Philip Poulin led the charge with two goals and an assist. The victory was anchored by an incredible performance from goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens, who stopped 38 shots to preserve the lead.
The gold medal match saw Canada and the USA face off once again, marking their sixth Olympic final meeting since the event began in 1998. The US has claimed gold twice (1998 and 2018), but Canada remains the most successful team with five gold medals. Four of Canada's titles were won against the USA, while their 2006 victory came against Sweden, leaving the Americans with the bronze that year.
Hilary Knight gave the US an early lead with a shorthanded goal. The American team spent much of the game fighting to get back into the match, but they couldn't break through until the very end. Amanda Kessel managed to score with only 12.5 seconds left on the clock, but the effort came too late to prevent a legendary Canadian victory.
Canada wrapped up the tournament with a record-breaking 57 goals. This victory followed a preliminary round win where they beat the US 4-2. Early in that game, Hannah Brandt nearly scored on a wide-open net. Canada briefly thought they had the lead when Natalie Spooner scored off a rebound, but the goal was overturned after US coach Joel Johnson successfully challenged for an offside.
Shortly after, Sarah deflected a point shot from Claire Thompson past goalie Alex Cavallini to put Canada up 1-0. Sarah ended the Olympics as the top performer, recording 5 goals and 17 points. Canada maintained control of the game, stifling US opportunities. Near the end of the first period, Poulin intercepted a pass from Kelly and used her signature shot to make it 2-0.
The US struggled early on, failing to score in the first period for the fourth consecutive game. Canada extended their lead to 3-0 when Poulin capitalized on a rebound from a Jenner shot that Cavallini couldn't control. Despite the deficit, the Americans fought back and eventually managed to score, narrowing the gap to 3-1.
The USA kept pushing for a comeback, but they struggled to get quality shots on target. In a final burst of energy with 12.5 seconds left, Kessel hammered home a rebound to make it 3-2. However, the Canadians shut down any further attempts, holding the lead until the final whistle.
