Carabao Cup Semi-Final: Diogo Jota's two goals secure Liverpool's place in the final

With an impressive 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates, Liverpool have marched into the Wembley final. After a scoreless first leg, the deadlock was broken by Diogo Jota, whose two goals sealed the victory. This result sets up a highly anticipated 2022 League Cup final between the Reds and Chelsea on February 27.
Liverpool registered an inspired 2-0 win against Arsenal at the Emirates. Liverpool recovered from a goalless draw in the first leg and advanced to the final at Wembley. Two goals from Diogo Jota made the difference and helped the Reds to seal a spot in the Carabao Cup final clash with Chelsea. The Reds will play the Blues in the 2022 League Cup final on 27 February.

The tie was completely undecided heading into the second leg after a 0-0 draw at Anfield, leading to a fierce battle on the pitch. While Arsenal had struggled historically against Liverpool—conceding 43 goals over 16 encounters—they actually dominated the first ten minutes of this match. That spark didn't last long, however, as Liverpool's superior tactical setup eventually wore the Gunners down.

Early on, Bukayo Saka won a promising free-kick just outside the area. Alexandre Lacazette unleashed a superb shot aimed at the top right corner, but it was deflected onto the post by Caoimhin Kelleher. Despite a shaky start, Liverpool remained efficient with their chances, even though a 13th-minute goal from Joel Matip was disallowed following a VAR offside check.

The tide turned completely when Liverpool scored a sudden opening goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold slid a precise pass down the left wing to Jota, who cut inside and drove across the goalmouth. Exploiting a gap left by the Arsenal defense, Jota fired a shot into the bottom left corner from just outside the box.

Arsenal had a golden opportunity to equalize when Lacazette found himself one-on-one with Kelleher, but he blasted the ball over the crossbar. Liverpool then put the game out of reach in the 77th minute. After a pinpoint cross from Alexander-Arnold on the right, Jota outmaneuvered both Ben White and the charging Aaron Ramsdale, controlling the ball with his chest before chipping it over the keeper. The goal stood after a lengthy VAR review for offside.

Arsenal's situation worsened in the final ten minutes when Thomas Partey was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Ironically, Partey had only been on the pitch since the 74th minute, having replaced Emile Smith-Rowe.

Liverpool is now aiming to further cement its legacy in the League Cup. Currently tied with Manchester City for the most titles at eight, the Reds hope to overcome Thomas Tuchel's experienced Chelsea side to claim a record-breaking ninth trophy.
