Drew Brees has stepped down from professional football after a stellar 20-year run, retiring as the most productive passer the league has ever seen. His career peak included leading the New Orleans Saints to their sole Super Bowl championship in 2009 with a win over the Indianapolis Colts.
During his interview, Brees emphasized that although his playing days are over, his connection to New Orleans remains; he sees this move as a fresh start rather than a goodbye to the city.
Before his tenure with the Saints, which began in 2006, Brees played for the San Diego Chargers. He retires with an NFL-record 80,358 passing yards and 7,142 completions. Additionally, his 571 career touchdowns place him just behind Tom Brady, who holds the record with 581.
Posting on social media, Brees mentioned that he gave his absolute all to his teammates and the people of New Orleans throughout his career. He spoke fondly of the incredible milestones they achieved together, describing them as lifelong memories that will always stay with him.
In the same social media post, he credited the organization for molding him into the player and person he is today, noting that the inspiration and strength he drew from the team were invaluable. For 15 years, his primary motivation was to reciprocate the support and opportunities the Saints had given him.
In the championship game that secured the Super Bowl for the Saints, Brees completed 32 passes for 288 yards, a performance that helped him earn the NFL MVP award for that season.
The decision to retire follows a few months after the Saints were knocked out of the playoffs by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who went on to win the 2021 Super Bowl.
Gayle Benson, the owner of the Saints, remarked that Brees' true value far exceeded any trophy or statistic, cementing his status as one of the most exceptional players to ever play in the NFL.
Saints head coach Sean Payton highlighted Brees' unrivaled commitment to excellence and his steady performance over the years. He described Brees as an outstanding leader both during the game and off the field, noting that his drive and attention to detail inspired everyone around him. Payton added that anyone who had the opportunity to coach Brees was truly lucky.
