Max Verstappen emerged victorious at the United States Grand Prix after successfully resisting a late-race surge from world champion Lewis Hamilton. With this win, Verstappen extended his lead in the world championship race to 12 points. The Red Bull driver beat out Mercedes' Hamilton by a slim margin of 1.333 seconds in a race defined by shifting momentum. Performing in front of 120,000 fans, Verstappen celebrated his first win at the Circuit of the Americas.
This victory marked the eighth time Verstappen hit the top step of the podium this season. Winning at a track where Hamilton had historically dominated with five wins made the result even more significant. Although Verstappen began the race from the pole position, he was overtaken by the Mercedes driver immediately after the start. Red Bull responded with a tactical early pit stop, utilizing the undercut to put Verstappen back in front.
By the second-to-last lap, Hamilton had narrowed the distance to less than a second. Despite the intense pressure, the reigning champion couldn't find a way past Verstappen's disciplined driving. The podium was rounded out by Red Bull's Sergio Perez, followed by Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari.
Hamilton took the lead at the first turn and held it for the first 10 laps. Red Bull then executed a strategic gamble, calling Verstappen in for fresh tires earlier than Hamilton. This move paid off; by the time Hamilton finished his pit stop and returned to the track, Verstappen had surged ahead with a lead of 6.7 seconds.
Hamilton spent the next phase of the race steadily closing the gap, reducing it to 3.3 seconds by lap 56. During this period, Verstappen made his second pit stop, briefly handing the lead back to Hamilton. After returning to the circuit, Verstappen was assisted by teammate Sergio Perez, who stepped aside to let him move back into second place.
Verstappen regained the lead with a comfortable 8.45-second cushion when Hamilton made his second stop on lap 37. Although the British driver fought back and put Verstappen under immense pressure in the final moments, the Dutchman kept his composure to secure a vital win.
Reflecting on his narrow victory, Verstappen admitted the start was shaky but praised his team for their effort in turning the race around. He noted that he drove aggressively in the closing stages, describing the final laps as exciting. For his part, Hamilton acknowledged that Verstappen drove an excellent race under difficult conditions.
