Every August, the F1 world enters the 'silly season,' characterized by a whirlwind of rumors regarding driver contracts and team switches for the following year. This season's volatility began prematurely when AlphaTauri swapped Nyck de Vries for the veteran Daniel Ricciardo. Amidst the ongoing speculation, Mercedes has announced a specific plan for October: Frederik Vesti, one of their junior drivers currently fighting in Formula 2, will get his chance to drive during the first practice session of the Mexican Grand Prix, stepping in for George Russell.
August is traditionally the start of the summer’s silly season when rumors about driver movement for the upcoming season start to circulate. The dismissal of Nyck de Vries by AlphaTauri, who replaced him with veteran driver Daniel Ricciardo, kicked off the silly season a little early this year. While we wait for additional rumors to bombard our inboxes and timelines in the coming weeks, Mercedes has some news to share. The Silver Arrows announced on Tuesday that Frederik Vesti, a member of their junior squad who is currently racing in Formula 2, will replace George Russell in the first practice session of the Mexican Grand Prix in October.
Vesti's current form in F2 has been impressive, leaving him in second place in the standings, trailing only Theo Pourchaire. With four wins already under his belt this season—including a high-profile victory at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix Feature Race—he is more than ready. Vesti shared his pride in the team's announcement, describing the upcoming Mexico City session as the fulfillment of a childhood dream. He admitted it's hard to believe he'll be driving for a team as legendary as Mercedes, the eight-time consecutive champions, in less than two months, noting that he has worked tirelessly throughout his junior career to reach this moment.
Vesti emphasized that this opportunity is the result of immense hard work and represents a pivotal milestone in his professional growth. He expressed his eagerness to test his skills in a top-tier F1 car alongside the world's elite drivers. Additionally, he extended his gratitude to Mercedes for the trust, as well as to his manager and sponsors for their constant support, adding that he is counting down the days until he can finally pilot the W14.
Under current Formula 1 regulations, every team is required to give a 'rookie'—someone with fewer than two Grand Prix starts—the wheel for two FP1 sessions per year. This appearance in Mexico will account for one of Mercedes' two mandatory rookie sessions for the 2023 season.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff praised Vesti's performance in Formula 2, stating that a practice session is the logical next step in his progression. Wolff highlighted that Vesti is not only fast on the track but also possesses a thoughtful approach to racing, meaning he knows exactly how to provide the feedback the team needs. Wolff expressed full confidence that the young driver will deliver a strong performance.
