Athletics: Tokyo hopeful Bromell dominates the Diamond League 100m sprint

Trayvon Bromell successfully rebounded from his first 100m defeat in several years by winning the Wanda Diamond League event in Gateshead. Clocking in at 9.98 seconds at the British Grand Prix, Bromell reclaimed his momentum, leaving Chijindu Ujah to take the runner-up spot with a time of 10.10 seconds.
Trayvon Bromell bounced back from his first 100m defeat since 2019 and won the 100m at the Wanda Diamond League in Gateshead. Bromell re-established himself by winning the men’s 100m at the British Grand Prix in 9.98 seconds. Britain’s Chijindu Ujah sealed second place by reaching the finishing line in 10.10 seconds at the Diamond League event.

While Bromell showed incredible speed at the US Olympic Trials last month with a 9.80-second finish, he hit a slump during the EBS Diamond League meeting in Monaco, where he landed in fifth place with a time of 10.01.

With a season-best of 9.77 seconds, Bromell is currently the fastest man on the planet and is determined to bring home the gold from the Tokyo Olympics. He is widely seen as the favorite for the U.S., aiming to break the long-standing dominance of Jamaica's Usain Bolt, who held the crown for 13 years.

Despite the biting cold of northeast England, Bromell's performance was flawless. He nailed the start, surged ahead of the pack, and coasted to victory, finishing well ahead of CJ Ujah (10.10) and Zharnel Hughes (10.13). Other notable competitors included Canada's Andre de Grasse, an Olympic and world bronze medalist who finished fourth, and fellow American Fred Kerley, who placed fifth; both clocked in at 10.13 despite Kerley's strong start.

Bromell mentioned that this victory provides the positive momentum he needs heading into Tokyo. He emphasized his plan to return to a rigorous training schedule and focus on proper recovery to ensure he's in peak condition, noting how grateful he is for his current health.

He expressed a desire to inspire others by demonstrating resilience in the face of hardship. This journey is particularly emotional given the 2016 Rio Games, where an Achilles injury during the relay forced him to be carried off the track. Tokyo marks his second appearance on the Olympic stage.

A trailblazer in the sport, Bromell holds the junior World record of 9.97 seconds and was the first junior athlete to ever dip under the 10-second mark in the 100m. With a personal best of 9.77, he now ranks as the seventh-fastest human in history.

Usain Bolt, the legendary Jamaican who retired at 34 in 2017, is eager to see a new champion emerge in the 100m and 200m for the first time since 2004. Bolt has personally highlighted Bromell as one of his top picks to take the 100m gold.
