India Open 2026: Lakshya Sen secures his debut Super 500 men's title

India's Lakshya Sen has claimed his first Super 500 title in men's singles after a victory over World Champion Loh Kean Yew. Sen was the dominant force throughout the match, winning in straight games (24-22, 21-17) to lift the India Open trophy. The 20-year-old phenom, already a world championship bronze medalist, proved his elite status with a masterclass performance that left the fifth-seeded Kean Yew struggling to keep up. The Singaporean ace was surpassed in just 54 minutes of play.

The Yonex-Sunrise India Open turned into a double celebration for the home crowd when Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy captured their first-ever doubles title at the event. The Indian duo displayed impressive form to beat Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in a tight contest, winning 21-16, 26-24. This victory followed a tense battle in the singles final between Lakshya Sen and Loh Kean Yew, who entered the game with a balanced 2-2 history. Although Sen had struggled in their most recent meetings, he played with newfound confidence and athleticism. His aggressive approach and precise, hard-hitting winners from the back of the court proved to be the deciding factor.
Lakshya Sen and Kean Yew had a 2-2 head-to-head record before playing the final. Sen had lost two of the last three meetings, but the game started with good confidence. The Indian proved to be the better shuttler after showing great athleticism. Sen used his attacking shots to great effect and troubled his opponent with punched winners from the back at the right moments.

Despite Kean Yew's excellent defensive efforts, Sen managed to find the gaps and break through. The Singaporean player actually took an early 2-0 lead in the opening game, but Sen remained patient and composed, fighting back with a four-point streak. This momentum shift allowed Sen to hold the lead for much of the first set.

Loh didn't give up easily, utilizing his technical skill to go on a six-point run that leveled the score at 19-19. However, the tension culminated in a 24-22 victory for the Indian player after Kean Yew committed a crucial error on the sideline.

Shaken by the first-game loss, Kean Yew returned for the second set with a more aggressive attacking strategy, quickly jumping to a 4-1 lead. Lakshya, however, refused to panic and clawed his way back to a tie. As his confidence grew, Sen intensified his offense, leading to a high-stakes tactical battle where neither player wanted to give an inch.

A few unforced errors from Kean Yew gave Sen a narrow 11-9 advantage, which he capitalized on by scoring five straight points. Although Kean Yew mounted another spirited comeback to close the gap, it wasn't enough to stop Lakshya from securing the championship title.

In the women's singles division, the second-seeded Busanan Ongbamrungphan claimed her first trophy of the year by defeating Supanida Katethong 22-20, 19-21, 21-13. Notably, Katethong had previously caused an upset by knocking out PV Sindhu in the semi-finals.
