P.V. Sindhu: Strategic scheduling is vital for athletic success

P.V. Sindhu, the current World Champion in badminton, argues that the most pressing need in the current climate is the smart organization of tournament dates to find a workable timeframe. Discussing the 2020 Olympics, she shared that the athlete community was fully prepared to compete, but the pandemic made the postponement unavoidable. Originally set for July 23rd in Tokyo, Japan, the Games have been rescheduled for July 24, 2021, as a result of the worldwide coronavirus outbreak.

During an Instagram Live event for the Olympic Day Workout on Tuesday, which included 21 world-class athletes, Sindhu remarked that a one-year postponement is manageable and expressed her certainty in being ready for the competition if circumstances remain favorable.

The 24-year-old champion added that a thoughtful approach to scheduling will be paramount once international sports fully return. Sindhu also pointed out that staying optimistic is the best way to handle the current situation. She is looking forward to the Chinese Taipei event this September, which marks the next major appointment on the badminton calendar. Furthermore, she mentioned a silver lining to the lockdown: the rare opportunity for people globally to bond with their families and discover new hobbies to stay inspired.

Since the lockdown began in India last March, Sindhu has been training from home to keep her mental state sharp. While the world remains in quarantine, she believes prioritizing physical activity and fitness is essential. Despite already having five Olympic medals to her name, the champion is hungry for more and is committed to the hard work required to achieve them. She wrapped up the session by explaining how a routine of yoga, meditation, and consistent exercise has helped her stay physically fit and mentally centered.

Sindhu's most recent appearance on the global stage was at last year's World Championship finals. In a historic performance, she secured the gold medal with a dominant straight-sets victory over Japan's Nozomi Okuhara.
