With a Game 5 victory over the Miami Heat, the Denver Nuggets have finally claimed their first NBA title.

The Denver Nuggets clinched their maiden NBA championship by beating the Miami Heat 94-89 in the deciding Game 5 at Ball Arena. Leading the charge was Nikola Jokic, who posted a game-high 28 points and 16 rebounds. In recognition of his performance, the 28-year-old Serbian center was named the NBA Finals MVP, making him the first player at his position to win the trophy (now named after Bill Russell) since the Lakers' Shaquille O’Neal in 2002.
Denver Nuggets won their first NBA championship title, outclassing Miami Heat 94-89 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals at Ball Arena. Two-time MVP Nikola Jokic inspired the Nuggets from the front with a game-high 28 points and 16 rebounds. The 28-year-old Serbian big man was voted Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals and is the first center to win the award named after the late Bill Russell since Shaquille O’Neal of the Lakers in 2002.

The celebration turned tragic hours after the buzzer when a mass shooting in downtown Denver injured at least nine people who had gathered to cheer for the new champions. Despite the fireworks that marked the end of the game at Ball Arena, the victory is bittersweet. Nevertheless, after 47 seasons in the league, the Larry O’Brien Trophy finally has a permanent home in Denver.

Winning the title was a brutal grind for the Nuggets. They fought an uphill battle to dismantle the Miami Heat's momentum and confidence. The game started poorly for Denver, as their perimeter shooting vanished; they hit just one of 15 three-point attempts in the first half, struggling to find any rhythm against Miami's suffocating zone defense.

Denver's shooting woes were stark, missing 20 of their initial 22 three-point attempts and struggling at the line with seven misses out of their first 13 free throws. Though they held a seven-point lead late in the game, Jimmy Butler sparked a comeback for Miami, scoring eight consecutive points to take a one-point lead with 2:45 remaining. Butler extended that lead with two more free throws at the 1:58 mark, but the momentum shifted back when Bruce Brown grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a tip-in, giving Denver a lead they would not relinquish.

With only 15 seconds left and trailing by three, the 33-year-old Butler attempted a game-tying three-pointer but missed. Denver sealed the championship at the free-throw line, with Bruce Brown and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope each sinking two shots to put the game out of reach. Butler led Miami's effort with 21 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds.

Reflecting on the victory, Nikola Jokic called it a massive team effort, admitting the game was 'ugly' at first due to their shooting struggles, but praising the team's ultimate defensive stand. He noted that the unpredictability of basketball is what makes the sport so exciting. Following the win, head coach Michael Malone praised Jokic not only for being one of the greatest centers to ever play the game but also for his exceptional character.
