Excitement is building in Bhubaneswar as Kalinga Stadium prepares to host the FIH Series Finals. This follows the first installment of the event in Malaysia. Running from June 6th to 15th, the tournament offers teams a critical opportunity to earn a place in the Olympic Qualifiers this November. Despite initial worries that recent severe flooding in Odisha might jeopardize the event, both the FIH and Hockey India have reassured fans that the schedule remains unchanged.

Eight nations—India, the USA, Uzbekistan, Poland, Russia, Japan, Mexico, and South Africa—are battling for a ticket to the Olympic Qualifiers. India finds itself in Group A, facing off against Uzbekistan, Russia, and Poland, while Group B consists of Japan, South Africa, Mexico, and the USA. The top team from each group secures a direct path to the semi-finals, leaving the second and third-place finishers to fight for the remaining two spots.

Because of their high global ranking, the home team enters the competition as the clear favorite. That said, their recent track record suggests a bit of caution. In an effort to reverse a slump experienced under Harendra Singh, India has brought in the renowned Australian coach Graham Reid to lead the squad.

During their tour of Australia, Reid's team started strong, remaining undefeated through three matches against the Australia 'A' side and the Western Australia Thundersticks. However, they hit a wall against the senior Australian national team, suffering a decisive 4-0 defeat.

Graham Reid will likely find the competition at the FIH Series Final slightly less daunting than the Australian national team. Still, he shouldn't underestimate Poland or Russia, both of whom proved their resilience and skill during the FIH Series Open. Additionally, Uzbekistan has proven they can be dangerous underdogs following their impressive performance in Lahore.FIH Series Final will be of a slightly lower notch than Australia’s. However, it has to be noted that Poland and Russia cannot be branded as mere pushovers. Both teams showed their quality and industrious nature during their respective FIH Series Open events. Uzbekistan have also shown that they have the ability to cause an upset after their remarkable displays at the FIH Series Open in Lahore, Pakistan.

If India advances past the group stage, Japan and South Africa will likely be their toughest opponents. While Japan has already secured an Olympic berth as the host nation, they remain a formidable force that could give India a serious run for their money.

While a top-two finish seems likely for India, the real challenge for Graham Reid is the clock; he needs to quickly embed his tactical vision within the team. If he can nail down his ideal starting lineup and a cohesive style of play, the hosts should have no problem succeeding at Kalinga Stadium.
