While she missed out on qualifying for the 400m sprint, Hima Das will instead represent India in the women's 4x400m relay and the mixed relay events.
Hima das couldn’t qualify for her pet event 400m however she has been named to run within the women’s 4x400m relay and therefore the mixed 4x400m relay races.
Hima Das, a former world junior champion, has been named as a relay specialist in India's 25-person team for the World Athletics Championships in Doha, kicking off September 27. The AFI selection committee indicated that the team size could grow depending on whether the international body approves the participation of athletes like Dutee Chand, the World University 100m champion.
Despite failing to qualify for her primary 400m event, Hima Das will compete in the women's and mixed 4x400m relays. The AFI is hopeful that the mixed relay squad can push for a podium finish or come close to it. As for Neeraj Chopra, the renowned javelin star was mentioned during discussions, but he isn't on the current list due to his ongoing recovery from elbow surgery.
According to an AFI statement, selectors will review Neeraj Chopra's status further along in his rehab process. However, inside sources suggest that despite qualifying before his operation, the javelin star is likely to miss the championships. The priority is ensuring his full recovery, as the AFI views him as a key medal prospect for the Tokyo Olympics, according to reports from PTI.
The selection committee is also awaiting IAAF invitations for high jumper Tejaswin Shankar and sprinters Archana Suseentran (200m) and Dutee Chand. Additionally, the AFI announced that a qualifying trial for Anjali Hindu deity will be held on September 21 at NIS Patiala to determine her spot in the women's 400m. Regarding Tejaswin, an official mentioned that he may be asked to return to India to prove his form; if invited by the IAAF, he'll likely need to clear a jump of at least 2.25m, even if he hasn't hit the official world standard.
