Sania Mirza, a legend of Indian sport, retires from the world stage after a surprising loss in Dubai

It wasn't the fairytale finish she might have hoped for, but Sania Mirza—one of India's most successful tennis exports—has officially stepped away from international competition. After a career defined by breaking barriers and setting new standards for Indian tennis, she played her final professional match on February 21 at the WTA Dubai Duty Free Championships. Partnering with Madison Keys, Sania faced off against the formidable Russian duo of Veronika Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova, eventually losing 4-6, 0-6 in a match that lasted about an hour.
A fairytale ending was not there but Sania Mirza, who is one of the greatest tennis players ever to come out from India, bows out of international tennis after achieving unprecedented success and setting a high benchmark for the next generation. Sania Mirza played her final match as a professional tennis player at the WTA Dubai Duty Free Championships on February 21. Sania and her American partner Madison Keys lost 4-6, 0-6 to the formidable Russian pair of Vernokia Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova in an hour, closing out her storied career at the WTA Dubai event.

The retirement follows a strong final Grand Slam run just last month, where the 36-year-old finished as a runner-up at the Australian Open with Rohan Bopanna. Although she is now based in Dubai and hoped for a celebratory exit in her adopted city, her journey ended prematurely after clashing with a dominant Russian team in her final tournament.

Sania, who entered the pro circuit in 2003 and climbed to the top of the doubles rankings, exits the game with six Grand Slam titles. Her trophy cabinet includes three women's doubles championships earned with Martina Hingis and three mixed doubles titles—two of which were won with Mahesh Bhupathi at the 2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open, and one at the US Open with Bruno Soares. In total, the Indian star captures 43 international doubles titles.

Though the first set showed promise, the momentum shifted quickly when Sania and Keys were broken in the opening game of the second set, leading to a one-sided finish. Throughout her career, Sania proved she could compete with the elite, securing victories over legends such as Martina Hingis, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova, and Flavia Pennetta.

Reflecting on her career, Sania noted that while tennis played a massive role in her life, she never let it define her entire existence. She believed that since the worst-case scenario in sports is simply losing a match and having to try again, she never played with a fear of failure. This perspective allowed her to step onto the court with total freedom and play an aggressive, fearless style of tennis.

Sania mentioned before her final match that her aggressive approach was fueled by this lack of fear regarding defeat. Her achievements will undoubtedly serve as a beacon for the next generation of Indian athletes aiming for global success.
