The Indian Men's Hockey team faces a grueling group stage at the 2026 Paris Olympics.

Coming into the Paris Games as Asian Games gold medalists and Tokyo bronze winners, India's men's hockey team has been handed a tough draw in Pool B. The eight-time champions are set to clash with heavyweights like World No. 2 and reigning champions Belgium, the formidable Australian side, Rio winners Argentina, and the teams from New Zealand and Ireland. Despite being ranked third globally and having broken a four-decade medal drought in Tokyo, India has historically struggled to overcome the likes of Argentina and the silver-medal-winning Australians.
Asian Games champions and bronze medalists at the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian men’s hockey team confronts a difficult Pool B draw at the forthcoming Paris Games. India, the eight-time champions, will face strong opponents like as reigning Olympic champions and World No.2 Belgium, superpower Australia, Rio Games gold winner Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland. India, currently rated third globally, won a historic bronze medal in Tokyo, breaking a 41-year medal drought. The team has typically struggled to defeat opponents such as Tokyo silver medalists Australia and Argentina.

Pool A is comprised of the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, and South Africa. These assignments were made public by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Sunday, right after the conclusion of the Olympic Qualifying tournaments.

There will be no Indian representation in the women's hockey tournament in Paris, a disappointing turn of events given their impressive fourth-place finish in Tokyo. Their Olympic hopes ended in Ranchi on Friday following a 0-1 defeat to Japan, while Japan, the US, and Germany all successfully qualified. On the women's side, the Netherlands leads Pool A, joined by Germany, Belgium, China, Japan, and France. Pool B consists of Australia, the current silver medalists Argentina, the USA, Spain, South Africa, and Great Britain. The FIH utilized world rankings to determine these seedings.

A total of 12 teams per gender earned their way to the Olympics through various routes, including automatic qualification for the host nation, victory in continental championships, or a top-three finish in the FIH Olympic Qualifiers. The competition format dictates that the top four teams from each group will move on to the quarterfinals. The broader Olympic event runs from July 26 to August 11, with the hockey action specifically scheduled between July 27 and August 9.

In a separate blow to the sport, Pakistan's men's hockey team has failed to qualify for the Olympics for the third consecutive time. After their final attempt in Oman ended in failure, many of the game's legends have expressed a mix of sadness and frustration over the decline of the former powerhouse.

Pakistan's journey ended after a heavy 0-4 loss to Germany in the semi-finals, followed by a 3-2 defeat to New Zealand in the fight for third place. Since only the top three teams could advance to Paris, Pakistan's Olympic dreams were crushed. The team hasn't seen the Olympic stage since 2012, where they finished in seventh place.
