India’s D Gukesh will face reigning world champion Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship in November-December of this year. Indian teenage Grandmaster is gearing up to take on China’s Liren for the world title. Emil Sutovsky, CEO of FIDE, the worldwide governing body of chess, announced this on social media after the 17-year-old from Chennai won the Candidates tournament in Toronto, a prestigious eight-player event held to select the world champion’s challenger. The venue for the contest is yet to be decided.

In a stunning performance, the teenage Gukesh beat out a lineup of chess heavyweights—Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Ian Nepomniachtchi—to clinch the Candidates title on Monday. He did this against players with immense experience: Nepomniachtchi is a two-time championship contender, while the world's number two, Caruana, was competing in his fifth Candidates tournament. Even the world number three, Nakamura, was a seasoned veteran in his third appearance. At one point during the 2024 tournament, a loss briefly pushed Gukesh down to second place.

Despite the wealth of experience his opponents possessed, Gukesh, the tournament newcomer, managed to cross the finish line first. He entered the final round with a slim half-point advantage over the chasing trio. All he needed was a draw against Nakamura to win, provided that Caruana and Nepomniachtchi also drew. Had either of those two won their respective games, Gukesh would have been forced into a tiebreaker match to decide the winner.

Gukesh's rise has been meteoric; he became India's youngest grandmaster at just 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days old, missing the global record by a mere 17 days. Last year, he made history by becoming India's top-ranked player for the first time in over three decades, surpassing the legendary Viswanathan Anand. Now, by becoming the youngest person ever to win the Candidates, he will also enter the World Chess Championship as the youngest challenger to ever face Ding Liren.

This year highlighted India's growing dominance in chess, with five Indian players qualifying for the Candidates across the open and women's categories. While Gukesh's historic achievement as the youngest male qualifier is the headline, other results showed India's depth: in the women's event, the experienced Humpy Koneru and the 22-year-old debutant Vaishali both finished tied for second. This trend is reflected in the April 2024 FIDE rankings, where five Indian men are in the top 25 and three Indian women are ranked among the top 15 worldwide.
