Young Indian star Gukesh is set to battle Magnus Carlsen in the FIDE World Cup quarter-finals

Gukesh D, the top-ranked chess player from India, has fought his way into the FIDE World Cup quarter-finals in Baku. His next challenge is daunting: a match against five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen. Ranking seventh in the world with a live rating of 2761, the teenager earned his spot after a strong performance with the white pieces on Sunday, where a crucial draw against China's Wang Hao secured a 1.5-0.5 victory. Carlsen also advanced after beating Ukraine's Vassily Ivanchuk, proving he is hitting his peak at the perfect moment. The two are scheduled to face off this Tuesday.

The Norwegian Grand Master acknowledged Gukesh's talent, stating that at 17, he has already established himself among the world's best. Carlsen remarked that given the quality of play in the quarter-finals, it's only natural to see a player of Gukesh's caliber competing at this stage.

Carlsen's praise is well-founded. Gukesh is currently on a trajectory that could see him break Alireza Firouzja's record as the youngest player to achieve a 2800 rating (which Firouzja did at 18 years and 166 days).

Only ten days ago, Gukesh surpassed Viswanathan Anand to become India's highest-rated player. While this ascent was anticipated, defeating Carlsen in a classical, over-the-board match would be a massive achievement. Although Gukesh has already made history by becoming the youngest player to beat Carlsen in an online game, the challenge is far greater when facing the champion in a physical, professional setting.

The Chennai-born youngster is clearly on an upward swing, having become the youngest player to hit a 2750 rating last month, surpassing even Carlsen's own record. While Carlsen is famously secretive about his strategies, Gukesh might have an inside edge; he was part of Carlsen's SG Alpine Warriors team in the first Global Chess League. Alongside other Indian talents like Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh experienced Carlsen's leadership firsthand, with the players noting that the champion went out of his way to make them feel comfortable.

Another Indian star, Praggnanandhaa, has also reached the quarter-finals after defeating Hungary's Ferenc Berkes. This ensures that at least one Indian player will advance to the semi-finals, as Praggnanandhaa is slated to play against his compatriot, Erigaisi. Additionally, Vidit Gujrathi and D Harika both played to draws on Monday, moving their matches into tie-breakers to decide who progresses.
