Indian senior shuttler Kidambi Srikanth overcame a high-spirited challenge from his compatriot Lakshya Sen to claim a spot in the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open 2023. In the Round of 16 match that had lasted for 45 minutes, Srikanth played strong from the start and never allowed his opponent to grow with confidence, defeating him in straight games by a scoreline of 21-17, 22-20. Both Indian shuttlers had come into the encounter with good winning momentum on their side. Sen had defeated former World No.2 Lee Zii Jia in straight games 21-17, 21-13, while Srikanth played long rallies to beat China’s Lu Guang Zu 21-13, 21-19.

Srikanth is scheduled to compete against Li Shifeng of China in today's quarterfinals (June 16). The initial stages of the match were incredibly close, with Sen maintaining a slight 11-10 edge by the halfway point of the first set. Following the interval, the experienced Srikanth took the lead, though the momentum continued to shift between the two. At one point, a couple of mistakes by Srikanth let Sen level the game at 17-17. However, the former World No. 1 regained his composure and surged ahead with four consecutive points to close out the first game.

The second game was equally tense, with neither player able to break away early on. After a 10-10 deadlock, the 21-year-old Sen managed to take a slight lead going into the mid-game break. This pushed Srikanth to tap into his full experience, allowing him to build a significant six-point advantage at 20-14, bringing him to the brink of victory.

Despite the deficit, the young Sen displayed incredible resilience and refused to concede. He mounted a fierce comeback, bringing the score level and putting the match on a knife-edge. Ultimately, Srikanth's experience paid off, and he managed to clinch the final points to secure his place in the final eight.

In other news, it was a disappointing outing for the top-seeded PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medalist. Sindhu was knocked out of the 2023 Indonesia Open after falling to Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in straight games, 18-21, 16-21. Following this Round of 16 win, Tai Tzu Ying will now face Spain's Carolina Marin in the quarterfinals.
