Indian senior shuttler Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the second round of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 badminton event on Tuesday with a come-from-behind victory over Indonesia’s World No.5 Jonatan Christie in Kuala Lumpur. Srikanth, who has been struggling for quite some time, defeated sixth seed Christie in an hour and five minutes in the opening round. The former World No.1 will play Hong Kong’s NG Ka Long Angus in the Second Round on January 11, Thursday.

Having earned a silver medal at the 2021 World Championships, Srikanth has often found it difficult to sustain pressure in deciding sets, which has led to several early tournament exits. However, the 30-year-old appeared to be in peak condition on Tuesday; despite losing the opening set, he ramped up his aggression to secure a stunning win. This victory further strengthens his history against the Indonesian opponent, whom he has defeated six times in eleven encounters.

The season opener started poorly for Srikanth, who found himself trailing 4-7 in the first set. A brief lead of 8-7 was quickly erased when Christie surged ahead with nine straight points. With Parupalli Kashyap coaching him, Srikanth managed to jump to a 4-0 lead in the second game, though Christie fought back to lead 11-7 by the interval. Even when Christie pushed the lead to 17-14, Srikanth showed incredible resilience, winning seven of the next eight points to steal the second set and keep his hopes alive.

The final set began with Christie in control, dominating the rallies to build a 14-9 lead after an initial 5-0 start. Srikanth, however, began to turn the tide by using sharp placements and aggressive returns that left Christie scrambling. As the Indonesian began to commit unforced errors, Srikanth capitalized with a seven-point streak to take a 16-14 lead. He maintained his composure until the end, celebrating with a fist pump as his opponent hit the shuttle long.

With the goal of qualifying for the Paris Olympics, India's top player HS Prannoy is eager to start his season strongly at the Malaysia Open this Wednesday. Currently ranked World No. 8, Prannoy aims to maintain his momentum as he faces Denmark's Anders Antonsen in the Round of 32 today. Meanwhile, attention is also on Lakshya Sen, who is striving for a top 16 ranking after a rollercoaster previous season.
