In Birmingham, the stage is set for a thrilling round-of-16 encounter on Thursday, March 14, where Loh Kean Yew, the 2021 world title holder, meets Malaysian standout Lee Zii Jia for the eighth time. Both players cruised through their opening matches on Wednesday. Loh dominated Ng Ka Long Angus from Hong Kong, continuing a winning streak against him and finishing the game in a swift 35 minutes.
Loh Kean Yew, the 2021 world champion, and Malaysian star Lee Zii Jia will compete for the eighth time in their careers in the last 16 of the 2024 All England Open Badminton Championships on Thursday, March 14 in Birmingham. Both men won their first-round tests on Wednesday (March 13), with Loh overcoming Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong and Lee defeating Japan’s sixth seed Naraoka Kodai. Angus had never beaten Loh in their previous three meetings, and that trend continued in Birmingham on Wednesday, as Loh finished in just 35 minutes.
Loh's momentum shifted early in the first set; after a 4-4 tie, he went on a tear, scoring seven consecutive points to turn a 2-4 deficit into a commanding 9-4 lead, eventually taking the set 21-12. The 26-year-old from Singapore maintained his edge in the second game, holding a seven-point lead for a portion of the set. Despite a late push from Angus, Loh sealed the victory with a 21-12, 21-17 result.
Lee Zii Jia's history with Naraoka has been challenging, with only one win in four outings—a victory achieved in the quarterfinals of last year's Birmingham tournament. On Wednesday, Lee repeated that success in a tense battle. While the 25-year-old Malaysian looked dominant early in the first set with a five-point lead, Naraoka fought back to level the score at 11-11. In a sign of improved mental toughness, Lee didn't crumble; instead, he surged ahead to win the first set 21-12, allowing his opponent only one of the final 11 points.
The second set seemed like a formality when Lee reached match point at 20-12. However, Naraoka staged a spirited comeback, racking up seven straight points to keep the match alive. Lee eventually regained his composure to clinch the final point, winning 21-19 and ending the match in 49 minutes. In a separate conversation, Loh opened up about his recent struggles with consistency, noting that his form has fluctuated throughout the entire qualification year. He acknowledged that while stability is the goal, these peaks and valleys are a natural part of the game.
Loh in his recent interview admitted that he has been in an extended period of inconsistent form. I think it’s not only recently, but more of this whole year of qualification period, I think there were a lot of ups and downs, Loh told the reporters. Of course, it would be better to be more consistent but having ups and downs is normal, he added.
Addressing the critics, Loh mentioned that it's impossible to silence the outside noise. He emphasized that his current strategy is to tune out the distractions and focus entirely on his daily routine and personal growth.
