Two-time Olympic winner PV Sindhu advanced to the second round of the Malaysia Masters 2023 women’s singles badminton event with a fighting win against Denmark’s Line Christophersen in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. Sindhu fought back in the decider and overcame a stiff challenge from world no.33 Christophersen to secure a 21-13, 17-21, 21-18 win in the round of 32 of the BWF Super 500 event at the Axiata Arena. The Indian shuttler, who has been struggling to find consistency this year, took enough time to settle into the match.
After an initial 5-5 deadlock in the first set, Sindhu took control and dominated the play. She held an 11-8 lead going into the interval and maintained that momentum, cruising through the first game with relative ease.
The tide turned in the second set, however, as the Danish player mounted a strong comeback. Utilizing sharp net shots and powerful smashes, Christophersen pushed the game to the limit. The crowd saw a high-intensity struggle that reached a 17-17 tie, but Christophersen managed to execute her strategy perfectly, neutralizing the world no. 13 to force a third set.
The final game started poorly for the 27-year-old Indian, who found herself trailing 13-16. Despite the pressure, the former world champion remained composed, relying on her experience and skill to stage a dramatic comeback and close out the match in one hour and two minutes.
With this win, Sindhu maintains a perfect 5-0 head-to-head record against Christophersen. Her next challenge comes on Thursday, May 25, where she will face Japan's Aya Ohori (world no. 28) in the round of 16. Now outside the top 10 rankings, Sindhu is looking for a strong run in Malaysia to improve her current 2023 record of 10 wins and 9 losses.
Over in the men's singles, Kidambi Srikanth delivered a commanding performance against France's Toma Junior Popov. The 30-year-old Indian dominated the match from start to finish, winning in straight sets 21-12, 21-16. Srikanth is now set to face the 8th seed, Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, who also advanced comfortably after defeating Kanta Tsuneyama.
These successful starts provide a much-needed morale boost for both Indian stars, following a disappointing exit in the group stages of the Sudirman Cup.
