Novak Djokovic achieves a historic career landmark at the Geneva Open

Novak Djokovic is back on court after a traumatic experience in Rome, securing a 6-3, 6-3 straight-sets win over Yannick Hanfmann. With this result, the Serbian star advances to the Geneva Open quarterfinals, aiming to build the necessary rhythm before defending his crown at the French Open. This specific victory is a massive milestone, representing Djokovic's 1,100th ATP tour win—a feat he achieved on his 37th birthday. He is now one of just three players in history to reach this number, alongside Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer.
Novak Djokovic returned to the court after a terrible experience in Rome, defeating Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to go to the quarterfinals of the Geneva Open, where the Serbian star hopes to gather valuable match preparation before defending his French Open title. Djokovic’s triumph marks his 1,100th career win on the ATP tour, which he accomplished on his 37th birthday. Djokovic is the third player in history to win 1,100 ATP matches, after only Jimmy Connors (1,274) and Roger Federer (1,251).

Coming off a stellar 2023 season where he dominated three of the four majors, the world's top-ranked player has hit a rough patch this year. He has yet to lift a trophy in 2024, and his hopes for a smooth lead-up to the French Open were derailed by a disappointing straight-sets loss to Alejandro Tabilo during the third round of the Italian Open.

The struggle in Rome was compounded by a scary accident two days before that defeat. While interacting with fans and signing autographs after his first match, a metal bottle slipped from a fan's backpack and struck Djokovic in the head. He later described suffering from nausea, dizziness, and bleeding. Even though he felt slightly better the next day, Djokovic admitted he felt like a 'completely different' person on the court during his match with Tabilo and planned to undergo medical examinations.

Having skipped the Madrid Open prior to Rome, Djokovic was concerned about his lack of match play heading into Roland Garros, where he is the defending champion. To remedy this, he accepted a wildcard for Geneva. Explaining his decision, he mentioned that he desperately needs more competitive matches—whether it's a few or several—to rediscover the peak form required for the French Open.

Despite the recent setbacks, Djokovic looked back to his best, maintaining control of the match until the end. After a tense first set that included a rain delay during the final game, he found himself down 0-3 in the second. However, he surged back, winning six consecutive games to seal the victory. The Geneva crowd celebrated his 37th birthday by singing to him and presenting him with a cake. He now moves on to the quarterfinals to face either Tallon Griekspoor or Denis Shapovalov.

In other news, Dominic Thiem's journey at Roland Garros has concluded after a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Otto Virtanen in the second qualifying round. Following the match, the 30-year-old Austrian gave an emotional farewell speech and received a commemorative trophy from tournament director Amelie Mauresmo.
