At the Denmark Open Super 750 held in Odense, Indian women PV Sindhu and Aakarshi Kashyap secured their spots in the second round of the singles event. In contrast, the men's side faced disappointments as Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen were both knocked out. Sindhu's path to the next round involved a 56-minute struggle against Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour, ending 21-14, 18-21, 21-10, while Aakarshi overcame a slow start to beat Germany's Li Yvonne 10-21, 22-20, 21-12.
The former World Champion entered the match with momentum from last week's Arctic Open semi-finals, dominating the opening game. However, the momentum shifted in the second set as Gilmour fought back to force a decider. Sindhu eventually regained her composure to sweep the third game, marking her second win over the Scot in their most recent three meetings after a battle that lasted nearly an hour.
In the round of 16, Sindhu will go up against the seventh seed, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung from Indonesia. While Sindhu historically dominates with an 8-2 lead, Tunjung has been the better player this year, winning two of their last three matches, including a victory in the Spain Masters final. Aakarshi also faces a difficult challenge against Thailand's Supanida Katethong; the left-handed world no. 19 previously beat Aakarshi at the Singapore Open earlier this year.
It was a disappointing outing for 2021 World Championship silver medalist Kidambi Srikanth, who fell to China's Weng Hong Yang (world no. 22) in a tight three-set match (21-19, 10-21, 16-21). This marks a worrying trend for the former world number one, as it's his seventh first-round exit in 15 BWF World Tour events this season. Similarly, Lakshya Sen, a bronze medalist from the 2021 World Championships, couldn't get past Thailand's Kantaphon Wangcharoen, losing 16-21, 18-21.
The tournament also saw several high-profile Indian withdrawals. Asian Games gold medalists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty pulled out, allowing Malaysia's Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi to advance. HS Prannoy, a recent Asian Games bronze medalist, was forced to withdraw due to a back injury. Additionally, the pairings of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand in women's doubles, and MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila in men's doubles, both opted out before the start. These results are critical as they contribute to the qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
