Sorana Cirstea has achieved a career-defining milestone by defeating World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka to enter the semi-finals of the Miami Open. The unseeded Romanian player stunned the reigning Australian Open champion in a straight-sets victory, winning 6-4, 6-4 in Wednesday's quarter-final clash. This win is particularly special as it is the first time in ten years that Cirstea has reached the semi-finals of a WTA 1000 event. In their first-ever head-to-head encounter, Cirstea's brilliant performance pushed her into the final four of a major tournament for the first time since 2013, when she narrowly lost to Serena Williams in the Toronto final.
Sorana Cirstea earned the biggest win of her career, defeating World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka to reach the Miami Open semi-finals. Unseeded Romanian Cirstea stunned the Australia Open champion Sabalenka in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in Wednesday’s quarter-finals. For the first time in 10 years, Cirstea will play in the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event. In her first meeting with Sabalenka, Cirstea produced a stunning performance to beat the Belarusian and advanced to the penultimate round of a major tournament for the first time since finishing runner-up to Serena Williams in Toronto in 2013.
Coming into this match with a flawless run of five wins without dropping a set, Cirstea played with incredible energy and took control of the match early on. The 32-year-old Romanian took full advantage of her opponent's mistakes, specifically timely double faults, to become just the third person to beat Sabalenka this season. Her impressive week also included a win over the 5th seed, Caroline Garcia.
Cirstea matched Sabalenka's seven aces and showed better composure, committing only two double faults while her opponent had six—three of which happened on critical break points. Although Cirstea broke early, Sabalenka fought back, dominating her service games to tie the match at 4-4. However, Cirstea withstood the Belarusian's powerful shots and broke back immediately, finishing the first set strongly with an ace.
The momentum continued into the second set, with Cirstea breaking in the very first game after Sabalenka double-faulted at 30-40, followed by a hold to love to lead 2-0. Sabalenka attempted a comeback and increased the pressure, but she couldn't capitalize, missing a crucial break point while leading 3-2.
The errors continued for Sabalenka, who double-faulted again while facing a break point in the subsequent game. Cirstea stayed sharp, taking advantage of every mistake to lead 4-3. Despite falling behind 0-30 while serving for the match, Cirstea kept her cool, saved two break points, and finally secured the victory.
\"I'm honestly a bit speechless. I knew going in that this would be an incredibly tough battle because Aryna hits the ball with so much power. I knew I had to stand my ground, and I'm just thrilled with how I played today,\" Cirstea remarked after her historic win.
On March 31, Cirstea will move on to the semi-finals to play against either Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova or the 15th seed from the Czech Republic, Petra Kvitova.
