Five historic milestones reached by Iga Swiatek following her Miami Open win

The World No. 1, Iga Swiatek, secured the Miami Open title with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 win over Naomi Osaka. By defeating the Japanese star in straight sets, Swiatek maintained her incredible momentum and successfully achieved the 'Sunshine Double.' The 20-year-old's performance in Florida was nothing short of dominant; she navigated a challenging draw—beating Viktorija Golubic, Madison Brengle, Coco Gauff, Petra Kvitova, and Jessica Pegula—before finishing strong against Osaka. This victory marks her third straight WTA 1000 title and her sixth professional crown overall. Furthermore, her winning streak has now extended to 17 consecutive matches since her triumph in Qatar.

Iga Swiatek has made history as the first Polish athlete to reach the World No. 1 ranking. She officially ascended to the top spot after her second-round victory over Viktorija Golubic at the Miami Open. This makes her the 28th woman to ever lead the global rankings. Before Swiatek's rise, the highest ranking achieved by a Polish player was No. 2, reached by Agnieszka Radwanska back in 2012.

By winning the Sunshine Double at just 20 years and 307 days old, Swiatek has become the youngest woman to ever do so, breaking the record previously set by Kim Clijsters in 2005, who was 23 at the time. She also ranks as the second-youngest player overall to achieve this feat, with only Michael Chang having done it at a younger age.

By taking home both the Indian Wells and Miami Open titles, Swiatek joined an elite group as only the fourth woman to ever secure the 'Sunshine Double.' She joins the ranks of tennis legends Steffi Graf (who did it in 1994 and 1996), Kim Clijsters (2005), and Victoria Azarenka (2016). In the broader context of the sport, she is the 11th player overall to achieve this, alongside ATP greats such as Jim Courier, Michael Chang, Pete Sampras, Marcelo Rios, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.

Iga Swiatek has been an absolute force on the court, showing lethal precision in her wins at the Qatar Open, Indian Wells, and the Miami Open. With this run, she becomes the first woman in history to win the first three WTA 1000 tournaments of a single calendar year. Her efficiency in high-pressure matches is staggering; she has a perfect record in finals across Grand Slams, WTA 1000, and WTA 500 events. To date, she has won all six of those finals in straight sets, never dropping more than five games in any of those championship matches.

Swiatek has now put together a string of 17 consecutive wins at the WTA 1000 level. This puts her in an exclusive club, as she is only the fourth player to ever reach such a streak, alongside Caroline Wozniacki, Serena Williams, and Victoria Azarenka.
