Nadal advances to the Australian Open quarter-finals after defeating Fognini

World number two Rafael Nadal moved into his 43rd career Grand Slam quarter-final on Monday after beating Fabio Fognini in the Australian Open round of 16. Nadal, who has been seeking an Australian crown since 2009, continued his streak of not losing a single set throughout the tournament. The match ended 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 at Rod Laver Arena. This is Nadal's 13th time reaching the quarter-finals in Australia, positioning him third all-time behind Roger Federer (15) and John Newcombe (14).

Given his exceptional form, Nadal is on a collision course with world number one Novak Djokovic in the final, though it's worth noting that Djokovic is currently struggling with an abdominal injury. The Serbian athlete advanced to his 12th quarter-final following a victory over Milos Raonic on Sunday evening.

Following the match, Nadal shared his happiness about reaching the quarter-finals, viewing it as a positive start to his year. He is currently aiming for his 21st major title, a feat that would set a new record in the history of men's tennis. He further mentioned that competing against a player of Fabio's quality in the round of 16 is always demanding, emphasizing that you can't expect a walkover when facing someone of that caliber.

Nadal is scheduled to face the fifth seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas, in Wednesday's quarter-finals. Tsitsipas moved forward after Matteo Berrettini was forced to give a walkover. Due to his strong head-to-head record against Stefanos, the Spaniard enters the match as the favorite. Although Nadal showed signs of lower back tightness, he appeared sharp, even if he wasn't playing at his absolute peak.

Throughout the match, the Spaniard created 19 break point opportunities but converted only six, hitting 24 winners compared to Fognini's 32. Nadal started the first set strong, quickly jumping to a 3-0 lead with some brilliant play. While the Italian fought back with great intensity, he ultimately couldn't overcome Nadal's skill. Both athletes faced difficulties with their serves; in one stretch, Nadal earned five break points and later had to save three of his own.
