Andy Murray experienced a disappointing and unprecedented early exit from Wimbledon, losing in the second round to John Isner. The former world number one was unable to overcome the American's powerful serve, eventually falling 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 4-6. Despite a spirited fight in the third set, Murray couldn't sustain the momentum. This result is a rarity for the two-time champion, as he had successfully reached the third round in every one of his previous 12 appearances at the all-England club.
Dominating the Centre Court with an incredible 38 aces, 2018 semi-finalist John Isner secured a commanding win. He is now set to face Italy's Jannik Sinner. The 20-year-old Italian, currently seeded 10th, showed great composure to defeat Mikael Ymer in a hard-fought contest, finishing 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
Utilizing his legendary serving game to full effect, 37-year-old Isner cruised to a victory. Murray's exit followed closely on the heels of Emma Raducanu's defeat to Caroline Garcia on the very same court.
Murray entered the match with some confidence after a hard-fought win against James Duckworth, but he struggled to find his best form against Isner. The American's heavy hitting put the Briton under immediate pressure, claiming the first two sets. Murray did manage to turn the tide in the third, pushing the set to a tie-break which he won, but the 35-year-old couldn't keep that rhythm going. In the fourth set, Isner played with strategic precision, preventing Murray from ever finding his footing again.
In the third set, Murray took control over Isner for quite a while and took the game to the tie-breaker where he triumphed over the American. However, the 35-year-old British player failed to continue with his rhythm and found himself on the back foot in the fourth set. This time around, Isner played cleverly and never allowed his opponent to get a foothold back in the match.
The deciding factor in the match was Isner's barrage of aces, which consistently kept Murray off balance. Additionally, the American was clinical with his opportunities, converting two of his three break points against the three-time Grand Slam winner. The match finally concluded after a few critical errors from Murray allowed Isner to seal the deal.
Earlier in the session, the US Open champion Emma Raducanu was sent packing after a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Caroline Garcia. Despite the high expectations surrounding the British teenager during her second appearance on Centre Court, Garcia's raw power and clean hitting proved too much to handle. This loss continues a slump for Raducanu, who has struggled to put together back-to-back wins at a Major since her historic 2021 US Open title.
