This performance saw her eclipse her own world record of 50.65 seconds, established during the June trials in Eugene. The victory keeps her five-year undefeated run alive and firmly establishes her as the all-time leader in the event. An overjoyed McLaughlin-Levrone mentioned that she kept her eyes locked on the ten hurdles in front of her, and she has now set her sights on breaking the 50-second barrier.
Speaking to reporters, the American athlete noted that every race is essentially a fight against those ten hurdles. She acknowledged that while the athletes in the neighboring lanes push you to be better, you can't lose focus on the obstacles themselves. Her strategy was to remain as efficient as possible to continuously lower her time. She also admitted there was huge pressure and anticipation for this specific race, but she managed to turn those nerves into positive energy.
Femke Bol had been desperate to finally beat McLaughlin-Levrone, having placed third in Tokyo three years ago and second at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene. However, despite missing the Budapest World Championships last year due to an injury, McLaughlin-Levrone proved she was still the dominant force in the sport.
Starting in lane five with Bol on the outside, McLaughlin-Levrone stayed composed as the Dutch athlete took an early lead out of the blocks. The momentum shifted just after the 200m mark, where the American surged forward, overtaking Bol and entering the final straight with a commanding lead.
As Bol began to tire and Cockrell moved up the ranks, McLaughlin-Levrone shifted her focus to the clock, pushing herself in the final stretch to break the world record. After the race, she celebrated with the crowd, draped in the American flag and wearing a tiara as she acknowledged her fans.
In contrast, Bol was visibly devastated as she finished, reacting with frustration at her own performance. She later admitted to the media that she had \"screwed it up.\"
