Stan Wawrinka stayed positive and dug deep to beat Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the second round on Thursday. Wawrinka held his nerve and fought hard to secure a win after failing to serve out the match in the second set. Wawrinka delighted the home fans again at the Swiss Indoors by successfully facing down an inspired comeback from Nakashima of America. The former World No.3 Wawrinka reached the quarter-finals in Basel for the sixth time in 15 appearances.

Following a dominant straight-sets victory over world number three Casper Ruud two days prior, the 37-year-old Swiss athlete seemed poised for another quick win until he surrendered a 5-3 lead in the second set. This opened the door for Nakashima, who swept the next four games to tie the match. The American youngster used aggressive, high-energy baseline shots to push the contest into a deciding set, but Wawrinka remained steady and made the most of the only break point he earned in the final set.

During the deciding set, Wawrinka kept pace with Nakashima before breaking his serve on the only chance he had, moving ahead 5-4. The veteran, whose ranking has slipped to 194 after several injury-plagued seasons, closed the match with a signature backhand winner. The entire battle lasted two hours and 12 minutes before Wawrinka finally emerged victorious.

Reflecting on the win, Wawrinka described the match as an intense and challenging encounter, noting that it was his first time facing Nakashima. He praised the American's skill and fighting spirit, admitting that the young player's aggressive style made it difficult for him to regain control in the final set.

Wawrinka also mentioned that his current level of play is a significant improvement over the last few months, adding that competing in front of a home crowd always feels special. He expressed his gratitude for the incredible support from the fans and noted how happy he was with his own persistence and ability to fight back during the match.

On Friday, Wawrinka will face Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarter-finals. The sixth seed, Bautista Agut, reached this stage after a surprising straight-sets victory (6-3, 6-2) over the British star Andy Murray. As the two players are currently tied 1-1 in their ATP head-to-head record, this Basel match will be their first meeting since 2019.
