At the Hulst event, Olympic gold medalist Pidcock halts Van Aert's streak of victories

Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) claimed his second elite cyclo-cross World Cup triumph of the season in Hulst after a hard-fought battle against Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal). The big story of the day was Wout Van Aert's (Jumbo-Visma) streak ending abruptly; a chain problem on the opening lap forced him into a desperate recovery ride. Despite the frustration, Van Aert didn't give up, impressively climbing from 40th position to secure a 4th-place finish.
Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) defeated Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) in a long-race battle to take his second elite cyclo-cross World Cup victory of the season in Hulst. Wout Van Aert’s (Jumbo-Visma) winning streak ended after a first-lap chain problem. This mechanical problem forced him to battle back throughout the race. However, Aert remained positive and raced to finish fourth from 40th position.

Utilizing his technical expertise and high speed, Olympic MTB champion Pidcock managed to open up a slight lead over World Cup leader Eli Iserbyt in the early stages. Iserbyt, however, refused to let him slip away, riding relentlessly to keep the gap to Pidcock around eight seconds. Both athletes stayed focused, avoiding major mistakes as they navigated the course.

As the final lap began, only a few seconds separated the two leaders. Despite a brief struggle with his bike, Pidcock maintained his momentum to take home his second World Cup win of the year. For Iserbyt, the result was sufficient to secure the overall World Cup series championship.

Reflecting on his win, Pidcock mentioned that a mechanical issue during the final lap forced him to ride conservatively, leaving him worried that Iserbyt would close the gap. This race also marked a rare defeat for Van Aert, who had won seven consecutive cyclo-cross events prior to his first-lap misfortune.

Pidcock set a blistering pace at the front of the pack, which Iserbyt matched with a brilliant performance of his own. By the conclusion of the third lap, Van Aert had fought his way back to 17th place, though he still trailed the leaders by 44 seconds.

Sensing a moment of weakness from his Belgian opponent, Pidcock attacked through the flat pit area. While Van der Haar trailed in third, Iserbyt managed to stay on Pidcock's wheel, remaining just four seconds behind, while Van der Haar fell 20 seconds back.

During the penultimate lap, Pidcock pushed the lead to nine seconds. Van der Haar held a comfortable third, leading Toon Aerts by 32 seconds. Iserbyt continued to apply pressure, but as the final lap bell rang, Pidcock used his momentum to maintain an eight-second cushion and ride to victory.

Despite taking second place, Iserbyt's consistency paid off as he secured the overall World Cup title with a massive 95-point lead and only two races left. The competition moves next to Flamanville, France, on January 16th for the penultimate round.
