Honda is entering its final year in Formula 1 and is determined to finish on a high note with Red Bull and AlphaTauri. Toyoharu Tanabe, Honda's F1 Technical Director, believes the team's hard work over the winter has paid off. He noted that the dyno results were highly satisfying, and the team is now eager to put the cars to the test in real racing conditions.
According to Tanabe, the team pursued major upgrades to the power unit to gain a competitive edge over other manufacturers. While he kept the exact specifics under wraps, he revealed that they modified the ERS, the turbine, and the ICE to ensure a meaningful boost in performance. Additionally, they've optimized how the power unit is integrated and packaged, building on three years of experience with AlphaTauri.
Discussing the adjusted timeline, Tanabe explained that Honda had intended to launch the new power unit this season before the pandemic hit. However, the F1 schedule shifts, European lockdowns, and supply chain disruptions forced them to push the launch to 2022. Once the decision was made to exit F1 at the end of 2021, Honda re-evaluated their strategy and accelerated the development plan.
Despite the compressed timeframe, Tanabe is confident that the development and prep work were handled successfully. He believes the team has poured all their technical expertise into this project before saying goodbye to the sport.
Tanabe expressed his satisfaction with the deal struck between Honda and Red Bull. Under this agreement, the Austrian team will manage the operations of Honda's power units starting next season.
In Tanabe's view, this is the ideal path forward, especially considering the immense value Honda gained from its partnerships with Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri.
He added that this arrangement honors Honda's long-standing legacy and significant contributions to Formula 1 over several decades. He feels proud that Honda can leave a lasting positive impact on these two teams and the sport as a whole.
