India's para-athletics team is aiming for its most successful outing yet at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, with a goal of securing twelve medals, five of which they hope will be gold. To ensure the team is physically prepared for the French climate, a vanguard of 16 athletes, featuring javelin standout Sumit Antil, has already touched down in Paris. After an initial stay in local hotels, the group will transition to the official Games Village shortly before the Opening Ceremony on August 25.
Sumit Antil is focused on making history as the first Indian to retain a Paralympic gold medal. To prepare, he and several teammates will be training at facilities on the outskirts of the capital. Coach Satyanarayana noted that the team will spend a few days at the Nelson Mandela Sports Complex before they are officially housed in the Games Village.
Located only five miles from the Stade de France, the Nelson Mandela complex is a premier hub featuring top-tier facilities for athletics, wheelchair tennis, rugby, and swimming. Athletes wanting to stay close to these training grounds can arrange hotel stays near the Games Village for better convenience. The athletics competitions will run from August 28 to September 8 at the Stade de France, the same iconic venue that hosted the Olympic events.
Coach Satyanarayana is feeling confident about India's chances, stating that achieving five golds and twelve medals overall would mark the nation's strongest Paralympic performance to date. This confidence stems from a stellar showing at the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, where the Indian team brought home six golds, five silvers, and six bronzes.
India is sending its largest Paralympic delegation ever to Paris, with 84 athletes competing across 12 different sports, including a strong contingent of 38 para-athletes. Devendra Jhajharia, who leads the Paralympic Committee of India, is even more optimistic, predicting a total medal count of at least 25.
The honor of carrying the national flag during the August 28 Opening Ceremony will be shared by Sumit Antil and Bhagyashree Jadhav, a silver medalist in the women's shot put from the Hangzhou Asian Para Games. In a departure from tradition, this ceremony will take place outdoors, processing through the heart of Paris from the Champs-Elysees to the Place de la Concorde.
In other news, Olympic silver medalist Neeraj Chopra is shifting his focus to the 2024 Lausanne Diamond League, where he is set to compete this Thursday, August 22.
