Gonzales starts his quest for an Olympic legacy with a win in the World Qualification opener

During the men’s 80kg World Qualification Tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy, USA's Robby Gonzales proved his resilience by defeating the IOC Refugee Team's Eldric Sella via unanimous decision. It wasn't a walk in the park; despite a commanding lead in the scoring, Gonzales was dropped in the second round after taking a heavy cross from the Venezuelan fighter. Nevertheless, the former 2021 world champion kept his cool and used his experience to dominate the closing stages of the match.

The victory was an emotional one for Gonzales, who described the past quarter as a difficult period, especially after an uncharacteristic early exit in his last competition. He acknowledged that while he is still rebuilding his self-belief, he is far from finished. Despite the momentary knockdown in the second round, the 27-year-old fighter expressed his readiness to overcome any obstacle to secure his 'golden ticket' to the Paris 2024 Games.

Gonzales' path to the Olympics has been plagued by misfortune. After missing out in 2016, he finally won the 2020 Olympic Trials, only to be sidelined by COVID-19 restrictions. Most recently, he failed to qualify via the 2023 Pan American Games. Having been so close yet so far, he is now more determined than ever to ensure he doesn't miss this opportunity.

Driven by a sense of urgency, Gonzales spoke about the sacrifices he's made over the last few months to prepare for this moment. He admitted that trying to make the Olympic team for a third time has been an exhausting grind, but credited his parents' unwavering support for keeping him going. Beyond the medal, he hopes his persistence will serve as an inspiration for the next generation of athletes, stating that he is now focused on building a lasting legacy.

Other notable results in the 80kg class saw Thailand's Weerapon Jongjoho, a 2021 world bronze medalist, advance past Robertas Liorancas of Lithuania. In the 57kg division, Kazakhstan's reigning bantamweight world champion Makhmud Sabyrkhan secured a tight win over Ethiopia's Fikrem얌ariyam Yadesa Leta, while Armenia's 2022 silver medalist Artur Bazeyan overcame Seifeddine Letaief.

It was a tougher day for India's contingent on Sunday, as both World bronze medalist Deepak Bhoria (51kg) and Asian Games bronze medalist Narender (+92kg) were eliminated in their round of 64 matches.
