IPL 2019 Exclusive: Jofra Archer claims Rajasthan Royals are genuine title contenders this season

During the 2019 IPL buildup, it was noted that Jofra Archer was instrumental to the Royals' success last season, taking 15 wickets in just 10 appearances.

Archer is poised to be one of the most important assets for the Rajasthan Royals throughout the IPL 2019 season.

The mood in the Rajasthan Royals camp is high as they prepare to open their IPL 2019 campaign this Monday against Kings XI Punjab at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

While the Royals were previously seen as the IPL's 'Moneyball' team—focusing on scouting untapped local and youth talent—they decided to invest more heavily in the auction last year. This shift in strategy helped them reach the playoffs in their very first season following their suspension.

Despite their success, Ajinkya Rahane and his teammates struggled in the Eliminator match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, largely because they lacked the presence of Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes, who were slated to return only for the final rounds of the tournament.

The team might face similar availability issues again if they advance far, given that international players are required for ICC World Cup preparations. However, one of the team's key figures believes the squad possesses the mental toughness to win it all this year.

\"We have a real chance of winning it all this time around because the squad is quite strong. Last season, things didn't go our way in the finals because Jos and Ben were unavailable for the eliminator. There's no reason why we can't go the distance this year,\" the all-rounder Jofra Archer shared in an interview with the Hindustan Times.

Archer, who is widely expected to be named in England's World Cup squad, was a standout performer for the Royals last season with 15 wickets in 10 games. This year, however, he has set his sights even higher.

\"Injuries kept me from playing every game last season. My goal for this year is to stay healthy and try to take around 23 wickets if I can.\"

Archer is a major asset during the death overs, utilizing a mix of pinpoint yorkers and slower balls. He believes that while practice is key, success comes down to mindset on match day. \"Bowling at the end of the game is tough; you can practice endlessly, but when you're out there, you just have to trust your skills and execute,\" the 23-year-old explained.
“It is extreme bowling in the demise and you can rehearse as much as you need however it is on the day that you need to trust that things will go directly for you and do them as needs be,” the 23-year old said.

Since taking over the captaincy last season, Ajinkya Rahane has led the team effectively. Archer believes Rahane's composed nature is a huge asset during high-pressure moments.

\"He's an incredibly calm leader. I don't think I've ever seen him lose his temper or get frustrated. In the heat of a match, you need that kind of steadying influence, and that's exactly what Ajinkya provides.\"

When asked why the IPL is considered the premier T20 league globally, the Barbados-born cricketer noted, \"Every league is great, but the pressure in the IPL is on another level because the absolute best in the world compete here. In other leagues, you might have a few superstars, but in the IPL, everyone is elite, and anyone can have a match-winning performance. That makes it much harder. Plus, the slower pitches make the contest between the batter and the bowler even more interesting.\"

Discussing his relationship with fellow countrymen Buttler and Stokes, Archer mentioned they bonded well last season. He also admitted he's glad he doesn't have to bowl to Buttler, whom he considers the toughest T20 batsman to face.

\"I'm really happy to have Jos Buttler on my side. Without a doubt, he's the most challenging batsman to bowl to in this league,\" Archer remarked.

While he stays focused on the present, Archer has one specific dream for the end of this tournament.

\"We haven't lifted the trophy since 2008, so winning this season is definitely the priority. Chennai Super Kings are the favorites again, so it would be amazing to have another Rajasthan vs. Chennai final, with the Royals coming out on top this time,\" he concluded.
