A few interesting stats nuggets from Cook’s Test career
+ When he takes the field at the Oval, Cook will mark his 159th straight Test match for England—a record for the longest unbroken streak of appearances in the sport. Remarkably, the only game he ever missed was during his first series against India, when he was sidelined by a stomach virus.
+ He remains the only batsman in history to break the 10,000-run barrier specifically as an opener. Of his total 12,254 Test runs, a staggering 11,627 were scored while batting at the top of the order.
+ Cook's ability to build strong starts is legendary; he shares the world record for the most opening century partnerships (24) with fellow greats Jack Hobbs and Graeme Smith.
+ He made an immediate impact on the world stage, becoming one of only three cricketers to amass over 1,000 runs in their first calendar year, finishing 2006 with 1,013 runs.
+ His transition to leadership was flawless; he is the only captain in the history of the game to score a century in each of his first five Tests in charge.
+ One of his most grueling achievements was a massive 263 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi back in 2015. He spent 836 minutes at the crease, making it the third-longest innings by time ever recorded in Test history.
+ His final century, an unbeaten 244 at the MCG, holds the record for the highest score by a player who 'carried the bat' through the entire Test innings.
+ He leaves the game as England's most experienced player, holding the national records for total caps (160), most victories (66), most defeats (55), and the most matches as captain (59).
